Carew House (development information)

Work has officially started on a £3.3 million new office development at the Beacon Technology Park in Bodmin that will support an estimated 120 jobs once completed. Developer Porthia is converting the historic Carew House on the former St Lawrence’s Hospital site into high quality office space.

The project is being supported with an £866,000 investment from the South West of England Regional Development Agency (RDA), which owns Beacon Technology Park.

Robert McGuffie, the South West RDA’s Cornwall Regeneration Manager, said: “This is an important project for Bodmin and North Cornwall. By creating much-needed office space it will attract more quality jobs to the town and breathe new life into what was a derelict site.”

The RDA has already invested £2.94 million in the 17-acre site to transform it into an attractive business park that includes a network of new roads, cycle paths and footways.

Essential services like water, drainage, gas, and electricity have also been installed to create five separate plots that will be marketed to developers and businesses wanting to locate to the park.

David Ellsmore, Chairman of Porthia, said: “Carew House is a stunning Victorian building and thanks to the RDA’s investment in Beacon Technology Park it is in an attractive location with excellent access for a variety of users. This is a major project for us that needs to be delicately restored and redeveloped accordingly.   We look forward to completing it within 24 months.

Carew House will offer nine office suites, facilities for cyclists and will include a range of energy and water saving features. There will be 54 car parking spaces and landscaping with new trees, shrubs and hedges.

Bruce Tyzzer, head of strategy and regeneration at North Cornwall District Council, said: “Beacon Technology Park is an extremely attractive business location and as its name suggests we expect to be a beacon of regeneration in Bodmin.”

Once fully developed, Beacon Technology Park is expected to support more than 800 high quality jobs.

Businesses interested in letting space in Carew House are invited to contact agents Miller Commercial on 01872 274211.
